2016 so far has brought with it not just a new year but new challenges and opportunities. I have ventured timidly into the tricky art of food photography after being approached by a local cafe in need of images for a new website. I am always nervous taking on jobs that I haven’t shot before as I am unfamiliar with exactly how to create a certain style with new subjects and although the principles of photography are the same no matter what you are shooting, we all specialise in particular areas and know how is best to photograph them.
This is when I think it is important to carry out research and test shoots where possible to feel more confident when it comes to shooting for your client so with this in mind I created a small studio set up in my living room window to experiment with lighting and styling the subjects in frame. Although I am not expecting to win food photographer of the year I am pleased with what I achieved and enjoyed learning a new skill!
